Created by Australian-based studio Beam Team Games, Stranded Deep is a game of survival that pits you, the player, against the elements. From an artistic and development perspective, the game is very impressive. What’s even more impressive is the fact that it was developed in just over two years by only two people.

Ben Massey teamed up with his cousin, Sam Edwards, to create the game in Unity. With only two people, it was truly a collaborative effort for the team that saw Ben tackling most of the artwork while Sam’s focus was mostly on the development side.

Of course, there’s a lot of hats to wear so each did their fair share of role-switching. Check out the game’s official trailer below to see the fruits of their labor.

In early 2013, Massey was still finishing up his previous game, Lavalink, when he started kicking around the idea of building a survival game. Once Lavalink was launched, he started dumping his time into what would eventually become Stranded Deep.

Although the team used Unity, there was a lot of customization involved to be able to get the various systems to work properly. To do this, the two cousins relied mostly on building custom solutions inside of Unity.

One of the key gameplay elements of Stranded Deep is the player character’s interactions with the environment. Only through combining certain items together, such as a pile of sticks to make a camp fire, can you hope to survive.

From crafting items together to build items to interacting with wildlife either on land or underwater, there’s an incredible amount of detail put into making sure everything is realistic.

Well, as realistic as you can expect while still being a fun game. Details such as the amount of readily available resources was something Massey and Edwards worked hard to make sure had a good balance between realism while still being fun.

One area I really would’ve liked to have seen more visuals was in the HUD. This is especially true for a lot of survival games that bank on realism to stay alive.

In Stranded Deep, one of the only indicators of something bad happening is either an encroaching darkness around the screen or some text that will pop up periodically if something’s going really wrong.

For example, as anyone who’s watched Castaway knows, one of the first places you should go to get food and something to drink on a deserted island is to a palm tree. A difference between Tom Hank’s character in Castaway and my character in Stranded Deep is the effectiveness of climbing down from the top of a palm tree without falling.

I found out pretty quickly that if you fall from a high enough tree, you’ll get a notice saying something about a broken leg. But after that, there’s not really any sort of noticeable negative effect.

You can still walk around at normal speed and after a few seconds of encroaching darkness subsided shortly after the fall there wasn’t anything noticeably wrong. As such, it was hard to tell if I had to do something to mend my broken leg or if it would just heal on its own.

Minimal HUDs are a great way to help your player feel immersed in the gameplay, but there are still times when you really need some sort of indicators of what the player needs to focus on next.

Because of the lack of feedback, some of my gameplay decisions ended up turning into issues that affected my survival in the game.

In the image above, I’ve started a trek from one island to another in the life raft but apparently I was running low on energy because partway between the islands I got a notification saying I was really hungry. A few minutes later, I died.

While I’m assuming this was death from hunger, there’s really no way to know for sure. As a game dev, this is a good reminder of how important it is for you to give your players the feedback they need to be able to make decisions that could affect how successful they are in the game.

On the other hand, there are some great little details the devs added. For example, if you’re like me and try to get around the backpack limit of things you can carry by dumping items in the bottom of your life raft and hopping in to go to another island and harvest its resources, you’ll find the raft starts to sink as you try to row out to open water.

Despite some of the gameplay issues presented by a limited amount of feedback, one of the most inspirational aspects of Stranded Deep is in the environment itself.

By creating a small number of assets as props, the Beam Team figured out a solution to reassemble the assets to create completely new environments.

While this technique isn’t new to gaming, it works well and really helps optimize your environments while minimizing the number of unique assets you need to create. This is especially helpful for smaller dev teams. Cheetah3D was used for creating assets for Stranded Deep.

Similarly inspirational is the way the environments are built out of the assets. All of the environments in Stranded Deep are procedurally generated on the fly in Unity. While this means no two games will ever be the same for the player, as a dev you can definitely draw inspiration for building any sort of procedural environments.

As you can see in the video above, Stranded Deep uses a simple grid system and new terrain tiles are generated on the fly according to the player character’s position and the camera view. When a new tile needs to be generated, it’s done by recycling data from previously visited tiles.

Since the concept of the game is survival on small desert islands, the only time you’ll ever really need this terrain generation is when you’re swimming underwater. To cover up the tile generation in the distance, Edwards developed a custom volumetric fog system to cover up distant tiles that don’t exist.

While this technique won’t work for every situation, one of the key takeaways you can get from this technique is that the devs figured out a solution that works for their game. It doesn’t have to work in every situation. And neither does the solutions you have to figure out for your game.

As with most survival games, the key to success is both in the exploration of the map to find hidden (or, in this case, sunken) treasure as well as knowing how to craft items together. If you need a few hints here and there, the best site I found to help with this is the Stranded Deep wiki over on Gamepedia.

When you’re involved in creating games, or any creative field really, a huge part of your process is always going to be looking for places to draw inspiration. While Stranded Deep itself has been inspired by games ranging from Sir, You Are Being Hunted to Dishonored, it stands on its own as a game that can offer plenty of inspiration itself.

You’ll love the visuals and ingenious methods of building procedural systems to help drive gameplay. Even though this is only available through Steam’s Early Access program for now, this is a highly recommended game for any artist, indie dev or fan of survival games.
